It is very hard to keep calm when every news we read makes us feel anxious.
In this blog I bring 4 tips to reset back to calm and be prepared for future.
Step 1 in dealing with Anxiety is to separate self from emotions:
Let me explain this with an example:
Sentence No 1: “I am anxious.”
Sentence No 2: “I am feeling anxious”.
If you notice, in sentence number 2 we are separating ourselves from the emotion of anxiety. That open up the possibility of actively choosing to feel something else. Secondly that makes us think why I am feeling what I am feeling.
Step number 2, I call as inviting your anxiety for a cup of tea:
Sometimes instead of trying to brush anxiety off, we need to address the root cause of it. For example, let us say you are worried about job loss. In this case logically dissecting the worst-case scenario makes us be prepared if that were to happen. Remember we are talking about a possibility here. It might not happen in most cases, however preparing for the worst makes us feel prepared, thereby less anxious.
Step No 3 is not to succumb to speculations:
When we interact with our friends, family or social connections, we many times end up hearing worst case scenarios being discussed. Be cautions not to sink back to anxiety due to all the negativities. You are prepared, that’s all you can do; now there is no point in worrying.
Step no. 4 is to remember “This too shall pass”:
During 2007 recession many of my friends were let go by their employers. When I look back now, most of them are in much better positions that the ones who did not go through that situation. So when difficult times come, if you use that as opportunity it will propel you to growth. Afterall life is so short. We cannot waste our precious moments in worrying.
Bad things happen, good things also happen but life must move on!
