Hygge for Indian summer (Romantizing summer)

In this blog, I take the principles of Danish Hygge, tweak and apply those and created 5 ways to enjoy the Indian summer with friends and family.

During dark, cold days of winter months, when there is a snowstorm outside, the Danes cozy up with their conformable sweater and socks, light some candles and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate drink and other sweet treats with their close friends and family. Hygge is all about being cozy, accepting the nature as is and making best of it with family and friends.

In India, one weather we struggle with a lot is summer: the heat and humidity. So here are 5 ways you can enjoy summer better and romanticize life during summer.

1. Enjoying the colors of summer: Summer comes with beautiful blooms, the pink poui flowers, Gulmohars, golden showers and ever blooming bougainvillea, such a rhapsody of colors. It is as if every tree has a colorful hat. Having a walk on bed of flowers underneath the trees, truly makes my inner child happy and brings back lot of childhood memories for many.

2. Enjoying the natures treats: Summer for many brings back memories of yummy mangoes. Enjoying a bite of watermelon in hot afternoons is not only yummy; it also keeps you hydrated. The coconut water, lassi, buttermilk and lemonade so many drinks to enjoy and keep us hydrated.

3. Enjoying the family time: When there is beautiful nature outside, who wants to stay indoors on summer evenings? Perfect for family picnic to nearby park. watching the beautiful sunset by the lake is my favorite thing to do on summer evenings. If you are a parent, after running around in the park and playing, treating your children with a kulfi for sure will make their evening special and teach them to enjoy little treats of life.

4. Summer clothing: We don’t pay as much attention to the fabric of our clothing. especially in summers it can make a world of difference in coping with the heat. Cotton and linen are ideal for summer. In India, it would be ideal time for us ladies to sport our traditional prints and weaves. The kalamkaris, Bandani, ikat, chikenkari, lehariya. So many varieties to choose from! Many of these prints are used in men’s clothing too. As the Scandinavian saying goes, “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing!” That is so true for our Indian summer too.

5. Being grateful: Many times, we keep complaining about the heat and humidity. But we urban dwellers has running water in our homes. Imagine the plight of some of the people in rural areas, travelling kilometers to fetch drinking water. How blessed we are! So let us count our blessings, be grateful for what we have and enjoy the nature’s seasons with our loved ones!
